Method to Evaluate Steering and Alignment Algorithms for Controlling Emittance Growth*

چکیده
Future linear colliders will likely use sophisticated beambased alignment and/or steering algorithms to control the growth of the beam emittance in the linac. In this paper, a mathematical framework is presented which simplifies the evaluation of the effectiveness of these algorithms. As an application, a quad alignment algorithm that uses beam data taken with the nominal linac optics, and with a scaled optics, is evaluated in terms of the dispersive emittance growth remaining after alignment.

Developments in Beam-based Alignment and Steering of the next Linear Collider Main Linac
The Next Linear Collider main linacs are 13 km linear accelerators which each contain approximately 750 hybrid iron/permanent-magnet quadrupoles in a FODO array. The small amount of vertical emittance dilution permitted in the main linacs implies a tight tolerance on the RMS distance between the beam and the centers of the quads. We describe two methods for measuring the offsets between the qua...

We describe the results of a series of simulation studies of beam-based alignment of the NLC main linacs using the program LIAR. Three algorithms for alignment of quadrupoles and girders are considered: the algorithm used in the ZDR, the ZDR algorithm combined with a post-alignment MICADO operation, and an algorithm which requires no steering dipoles but requires twice as many alignment segment...
متن کاملQuadrupole Alignment and Trajectory Correc- Tion for Future Linear Colliders: Slc Tests of a Dispersion-free Steering Algorithm
The feasibility of future linear colliders depends on achieving very tight alignment and steering tolerances. All proposals (NLC, JLC, CLIC, TESLA and S-BAND) currently require a total emittance growth in the main linac of less than 30-100% [1]. This should be compared with a 100% emittance growth in the much smaller SLC linac [2]. Major advances in alignment and beam steering techniques beyond...
متن کاملQuadrupole Centering and Beam Steering in the next Linear Collider Main Linacs
Accurate measurement of quadrupole-to-BPM center offsets and use of this information in an auto-steering algorithm are two essential components of emittance preservation in the Next Linear Collider main linac. We present the results of an analytic/simulation study of possible statistical and systematic limitations on the measurement of quad-BPM center offsets. These results are incorporated in ...
متن کاملBeam-Based Alignment of the NLC Main Linac, Part Two: Dispersion-Free Steering and Dispersion Bumps
The standard prescription for NLC main linac steering assumes that the RMS offset between a quad’s magnetic center and the corresponding BPM’s electrical center can be determined at the level of a micron. This is a fearsome requirement, and will be particularly difficult to achieve if hybrid iron/permanent magnet quads are used in the main linac. As an alternative, the Dispersion Free Steering ...
